Youth Fai Chun Calligraphy Contest

Have you ever written Fai Chun before? Fai Chun is a traditional decoration of Chinese Calligraphy that is often used during Chinese New Year. Chinese put Fai Chun in the doorways to create festive atmosphere.

Chinese Calligraphy is vital to the Chinese Culture. The traditional has been inscribed in the World Intangible Cultural Heritage Listopen_in_new by UNESCO in 2009. Learning and appreciating this unique oriental art can help calm and heal one’s mind. The contest aims to promote Fai Chun culture that is expressed with Chinese Calligraphy.

Our first “Youth Fai Chun Calligraphy Contest” promotes the peace message and encourage young people to participate in writing Chinese Calligraphy. We hope that this event will be able to bring liveliness in the wake of spring, and echo the opportunity of “resurrection” and a great start for 2021.

Within 17 SDGs, Calligraphy for Peace is related to with the third SDG, “good health and well-being” on account of the relaxing nature of Chinese Calligraphy.  Participants relieve their stress after taking part in our Youth “Fai Chun” Calligraphy Contest. Also, this activity achieves the fourth and the eleventh SDGs, which are respectively quality education and sustainable cities and communities. Being a kind of World Intangible Cultural Heritage, Chinese Calligraphy can maintain the Chinese tradition and encourage the peace message.

Requirements

General requirements
  1. Text: (A)平安和樂    |  (B) 和平是福     | (C) 和諧平安   | (D)和氣心平    | (E)如意和平
  2. Select one to three text above and write vertically in any calligraphic script.
  3. Each contestant can submit at most three fai chuns (each in different text or calligraphic script).
  4. Paper: (Gold-sprinkled) Red or orange Xuan Paper
  5. Paper size:
    Primary group: 11cm × 35cm (Height)
    Secondary group: 17cm × 70cm (Height)
  6. Contestants may be required to hand-in a second sets of fai chuns after selected for the finals
Requirements for the Most Creative Writing Award

Contestants may submit an additional fai chun to compete for the newly added “Most Creative Writing Award”.

  1. Refer to the above section for contents
  2. The submission to compete for this award must be clearly labelled as such.
  3. Submissions must contain both creative and calligraphic elements
  4. Paper size should be in between 11cm x 35 cm – 17 cm × 70 cm, i.e. half of the length of a piece of 4-inch couplet paper
  5. There is only one round of selection for this award. There are no finals.

Post your work to the UNESCO Hong Kong Association Glocal Peace Centre Secretariat. Indicate “Calligraphy for Peace” and your group on the envelope.

Remember to write your name, your participation group and your school name on the back of your “fai chuns”.

The postmark date must be on or before the deadline.

Preliminary Results + Entering the finals

  1. The Preliminary results will be announced on late March 2021 on GPC Facebook Pageopen_in_new (participants will be individually informed of the results, and the competition final’s contents and requirement) ;
  2. Outstanding Participation Award winning schools and winners of the Most Creative Writing Award shall also be announced simultaneously.
